Galleons

Walking along the old stone battlements tonight
Imagining ships out to sea
Galleons laden with gold in the waves
I know what it costs to be free

Peer into a shadowy cathedral tonight
Candles are burning soft and low
A girl in a white dress is gliding down the aisle
In the tower bells begin to toll

Dark steals through San Juan Batiste tonight
Streets twist and gleam in the rain
The viceroy’s castle sits high on a rock
And galleons are sailing for Spain

In the deepest jungles brave conquistadors
Hack through the gloom with machete knives
Eldorado’s towers burn like fire in their dreams
For gold they gladly risk their lives

In jungles of our hearts we dig deep into the earth
For love more precious than their gold
Plunder for pirates who know not what it’s worth
A prize to be captured, bought and sold

Dark steals through San Juan Batiste tonight
Salome is dancing for the king
St. John the Baptist’s head is brought in on a plate
And still the wedding bells ring

Couples young and happy walk along the promenade
In their first flush of love they cannot see
Galleons laden with gold under sail
Galleons at the bottom of the sea

Dark steals through San Juan Batiste tonight
Streets twist and gleam in the rain
The groom slips a gold ring on the finger of his bride
And galleons are sailing for Spain
